Gate Way To The Open Mizuno Open 2021

Juvic Pagunsan marks 65 with only 11 club in his self-carried bag to gain outright lead

Juvic Pagunsan a top player from Philippines made remarkable round on his "own". 43 years old scored bogey free 65 on the R2 of the Mizuno Open to become solo leader.

"I played perfectly", recalled Juvic as he made 7 birdies and gained 3 shot lead into final Sunday. Today was his 3rd time this year to carry his own caddy bag on his shoulders. He does have the choice to use electrically assisted carts, but he says, "with those carts, you have to go around the green and that is troublesome. This style suites me better".

In order to lose wight on his bag, he took out his 3, 4, 6, and 8 Irons out of hi bag and added 19 degrees Utility club, but he fought a great round with only 11 clubs today/
"Well, I am getting older, so it's better to be lighter. What do I do when I need 6 Iron? Well. I will just adjust it by using different club. On 11th, wind was blowing at me and I had 160 yards to play, and I used my 5 Iron, what choice do I have?"

He cleverly adjusted his swing range and shaft length, etc. to manage.
"Since I didn't have much choice of clubs, I didn't have to think too much to choose."

Juvic got on the roll as the wind started to get stronger. On 14th, he darted to 60 cm to the pin. He took away 4 birdies on his 5 finishing holes and said, "I played superb today".

Koki Shiomi, who was playing along with Juvic was amazed.
"Juvic was great, he had controlled his shots even some of the distances were in between yardages. It didn't matter to him. He made great score without any problem."

Pandemic situation is very severe back home and he really worries about his wife and 2 children.
"I talk to them on video phone every night, I just pray for their safety. Even I go back I have to go under 2 weeks of restriction period, just like Japan. I am afraid that I might not be able to go home until December."

Juvic turned Pro in 2006 at age of 28. He came to Japan Tour in 2012. He has been as a runner-up for 5 times, including the one at this year's Diamond Cup, but has not been able to win yet. He got closest to the victory at 2012 Japan Open, but failed to come through as he made bogies on his closing holes. If Juvic finishes within Top 2 this week, he will gain the ticket to The Open, a dream he will not let go easily.
"I will produce a lot of good shots tomorrow and stay focused until the end. If I could make the putts, I will have the chance to win."
