Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Sammy Cup 2021

No matter the pains from his injury and illness, Atomu reaches out to his hometown Kumamoto

Second half of this year's tournaments will resume from this week's Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Sammy Cup in Hokkaido Prefecture. For past few days, terrible heavy rain has been giving many hardships to the towns and cities of Japan, including Atomu's hometown Kumamoto Prefecture.

"My home is fine for now but it really rained heavily on Kumamoto Prefecture, so I am very worried about related disasters from happening."

But Atomu had to proceed with his obligations. Wednesday's Pro-Am was under poring rain, they could have, but Atomu's group enjoyed the full 18 holes under drenched condition.
"We had to cancel the tournament last year, so guests were really looking forward to this. I am glad that they have enjoyed, nevertheless of the bad weather", smiles Atomu, but he himself was under many pain.

He broke his ribs from fatigue fracture, last month on July 17th. It still hurts much and today, his illness, Ulcerative colitis has recurred. Having to play with the pain and though the tough weather condition was pretty demanding.
"Well, it was tough, but it is my obligations as a professional player."

He also pushed himself last week on August 13th, as it was the day for the charity event to help out his hometown Kumamoto. In July 2020, devastating landslide and flood disaster haunted his hometown Kumamoto. This charity was to gain funds to help out people in need. TV personal from the Kumamoto, Kohei Takamura produced this charity event and other Tour players such as Ryutaro Nagano and Shota Akiyoshi along with Atomu from Kumamoto joined. Other players such as Daijiro Izumida from neighboring Kagoshima Prefecture also helped out. Unfortunately, the charity round of golf was cancelled due to bad weather, but charity auction was a succeed.

"Thanks to so many JGTO Tour players and also JLPGA players such as Momoko Ueda and Asuka Kashiwabara from same Kumamoto Prefecture, we were able to gain double of the amount of funds for the charity auction from what we aimed for. I have been taking this charity effort very seriously since the earthquake in Kumamoto 5 years ago. Right now, any kind of disaster could occur in any places in Japan. So, it is not someone else's problem to me. Do whatever I could to help, through golf. Since I broke my ribs, I haven't been able to practice, so I don't know about my game this week, but I will do my best, step by step".
