Kansai Open Golf Championship 2021

Disappointing "lost ball" on the final hole to give away the win, but Chan Kim says "that's golf"

Chan Kim had the great chance to win on Sunday at Kansai Open up until 18th tee box. Chan was undecisive whether the wind was blowing from back or towards him. He was also wondering whether to go with low or high trajectory shot.

Chan is known as the longest hitter on the Japan Tour, but he says, "I not so good hitting low trajectory shots. If I could see how the wind was blowing, I would have chosen to hit high trajectory, but I went on to swing it before making my mind."

His tee shot went way right into the deep woods and got lost. After hitting provisional ball, Rikuya Hoshino, Kunihiro Kamii and their caddies as well as organizing staffs gathered and looked everywhere for the ball, but time was up.

"I should have broken loose and start all over after really deciding how to make the shot."
But no matter how Chan regretted, it was too late. Lost ball caused him a double bogey and lost against Rikuya Hoshino by 2 shots.

"Well, this is golf" laughed cynically.

Chan Kim was at 3-way tie as co-leader starting his Final Round and he was on the roll. He had positive lead until he stumbled for a bogey on 14th, where he got caught in the bunker on his 2nd shot. Rikuya birdied the hole, and it became a 2-shot swing. Then on 16th, Chan failed to make 3-meter par save and gave away the leader spot to Rikuya.

After Rikuya selected 3I to layup on the 350 yards Par 4 17th, "I told myself this has to be at least a birdie or may be a chip in eagle to beat him. I was trying figure out what would be the best way to give myself the big chance and I chose to hit with 1W.

Then Chan recalled "I really tried to get it in two", his shot from 43 yards got close enough to the pin for a birdie to be tied again with Rikuya. But shocking trouble waited Chan on the final 18th.

"The back nine holes were really tough as the wind were blowing att you on the difficult holes. Last 5 holes have so many tree lines and it was not easy to figure out how the wind was blowing. But I am satisfied with my play overall, so I am looking forward to next week. I will try to be better next week and eventually win on one of the few games to come."

His 2nd victory following the JT Cup for this prolonged 20-21 season must wait just a bit.
