Kansai Open Golf Championship 2021

Toru Taniguchi as co-leader after R2, has the chance to become 3rd Eldest Winner of the Tour

53 years old senior player Toru Taniguchi seems to get tougher and tougher every day. He managed to score double 66 for his two rounds at the Kansai Open Golf Championship. The venue for this year's Kansai Open, Arima Royal GC is known to have very hilly ups and downs, but Toru says, "I have got used to climbing this course up and down on the 1st Round, so it felt easier today."

Today, he was in the same groupings with Shota Akiyoshi, who was always few yards ahead of Toru in distance, "but I am better in score so, if I caught up with him in distance, that is too much, right?" joked Toru.

He was brilliant on his shot making, as he was facing trouble shot on his 2nd shot at 9th hole. He was blind sighted by a tree in front of him but managed to fade the ball perfectly to get it close on the left side of the pin. Unfortunately, he couldn't make the birdie putt it was great shot.
"My shots are pretty good now. I have enough distance and great control."

After his turn, on Par 5 10th, he got the ball up close to the pin from the deep guard bunker. Then on 11th, his 2nd shot from 160 yards with 7I darted the pin to get a tap in birdie.

"I got to 3-meter on 8th, and Par 3 15th was really close too."
Toru was all over the pin today, getting set to place his hands on his 21st Tour victory.
"Well, it's only half turn, I will try my best on the weekends too."

This week he is staying at Arima hot springs resort, which helps him heal the fatigue from the tough hilly rounds. Due to pandemic, all of the restaurants are closed by 8:00pm, so he has to rely on fast food for his meal.
"I really don't mind about what I eat. Eatin g fast food makes me feel like I am back in my college days again. I am just so grateful that we are able to play at the tournaments even under these pandemic circumstances."

Toru will be 53 years and 74 days old on Sunday, if he wins, he will replace the No.3 spot on the Eldest Winner Record of the Tour held by Tommy Nakajima (2006 SMBC VISA Taiheiyo Masters at 53 years and 23 days), following No.1 Jumbo Ozaki (2002 ANA Open at 55 years and 241 days), No.2 Teruo Sugihara (1990 Daikyo Open at 53 years and 178 days).
