Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters 2021

Regrets losing by 1 shot but Takumi Kanaya exceeded 100-million-yen mark & became No.1 Money Ranker

A big change on the Money Race happened as Takumi Kanaya jumped up to No.1 position on the Money Rankings with his runner-up finish. He couldn't accomplish the record of "winning the same tournament both as amateur & as professional", which was last made by Hideki Matsuyama in 2011 as amateur and 2016 as professional on SMBC VISA Taiheyo Masters, by 1 shot.

Takumi started out the Final Round 1 stroke behind the leader Hideto Tanihara. He kept his patience and waited for his chance. But very unlikely of him, his shots lost accuracy and couldn't get himself the chances. He made 6-meter on 5th for birdie, but a hole before that his birdie putt became a lip out.

He made the turn with 1 birdie and 1 bogey. He kept on saving pars. Then on 14th, as Hideto plunged in the water hazard, Takumi made 2-meter to save par and caught up with him. Takumi also made great par save on 17th and made fist pump and motivated himself, as he was just 1 shot behind the leader going into final 18th.

On the 18th tee shot, Hideto and Takumi both fell into the left side bunker. They both placed their chances on their 3rd shot and Takumi was much closer to the pin. But Hideto made the winning birdie putt and took away the victory.

"I played with all of my might until very last, but Hideto was just too great. But I am satisfied since I did all I could do. I would really want to accomplish the victory on my next chance."

He did lose and become runner-up, but with that 15-million-yen prize money, his earning reached 100-million-yen mark. Takumi surpassed Ryosuke Kinoshita and jumped up from 5th to No.1 on the Money Rankings.

Next week, he will be defending his Champion title. If he accomplishes, it will be very unique since it will be for the 2nd time on the same season, as this is prolonged 2020-21 season.

"I want to win next week and make the Order of Merit title concrete."
