Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters 2021

48 years old Shingo Katayama makes another good start says "I will keep my playing style"

48 years old Shingo Katayama was enjoying having the spectators around him. Gusty wind was making the tough course even tougher, but Shingo finished with 2 under.

"I should say, this is best game ever."

On his front nine at Par 5 18th.

"I was left behind for 100 yards from the other two. Naoyuki Kataoka and amateur Taiga Sugihara were using wedges on their 2nd shots, while I had more than 200 yards to play."

But Shingo safely got on to the green in two, from 210 yards by 4H, and went one making 17-meter eagle from lower level of the green. Spectators applauded big as Shingo waved.

Last week at Mynavi ABC Championship, where he has won 4 times already, he finished as 4th.

"Young guns these days have great distance advantage. It is power game now. But I also won here too, so I do have experience advantage."

Shingo has won back in 2008 and 2015.

Shingo has 32 victories and Lifetime exemption, and he is also ranked 33rd on the Money List.

"I get to choose the tournament that my golf style suits."

He finished 10T last year at Taiheiyo.

"I have won here, and I really like this course. I knew that if the conditions get tougher, that will be my advantage. It did turn out to be tough today. I am well satisfied playing under par."

When he was told that it will be gusty wind again tomorrow, he smiled.

"That is a great news. Since many players have distance advantage, so when the wind factor makes the course tougher, that would be better for me. I have decided not to do anything that I am not capable of. I want to play with my style and have fun for 3 more rounds."
