Mynavi ABC Championship 2021

Winner Yosuke Asaji prefers tough dead heat battle as he could get really focused

Yosuke Asaji seems to love the dead heat game, as he could get really focused on his performance. He won his 2nd victory at ANA Open in 2019, and it was 5-way playoff.

"I could be stronger when I face critical situations. I get focused and could aim precisely without hesitation. I also get pumped up when I face the situation from trouble shots, such as hitting from where I can't see the pin position rather than from the middle of the fairway."

That charismatic talent showed on 17th. All 3 of them couldn't find the fairway and as other 2 laid up, Yosuke chose to play aggressive and went over the tree line from the deep roughs toward the green. This splendid iron shot not only caught the green but came to 7-meter to the pin and he also made that birdie putt to take the lead.

"It seemed fairly possible if I hit with my 7I over the trees. I must avoid the tree in front of me since left side was OB zone, I made a perfect slice shot and cleared all the task."

"Then on final 18th, both of them were stuck, I knew if I could get it on with my 2nd shot, I would take away the victory."

He safely got his 2nd shot from 170 yards with 8I onto the green and made easy 2-putt birdie to close the deal. At the end, Yosuke made 2 shots lead against the other 2 on the final 2 holes to steal away the victory. Yosuke started out at 3T, 1 shot behind the leaders and did suffer bogeys on 8th and 9th, but he has taken the stress under control. Yosuke made magnificent shot on his 2nd shot from under the tree and stuck it to the pin on 7th, and also on 15th he gave himself 5-meter eagle chance by his 5W to catch up to the leader.

"I did have some trouble, but overall, my round was perfect."

"In junior days I practiced hitting over the net to improve my short game. I am good at it, so I went on making it my strong point."

He has placed 4 wedges, 48, 52, 57 and 62 degrees.

This allows me to make various shots and I have confidence that I could aim the pin from anywhere. My playing style may not suite the long courses, but I am good at short and narrow courses. I do want to have stability on my results, but I do have several top 15s this years and made the cutline a lot, so I say my game is pretty stable this season. I have gained 50 million yen today and since there is 4 more tournaments left, I want to get to 100 million this year.
