Golf Nippon Series JT Cup 2020

Defending Champion Ryo Ishikawa ends at 6T shows disappointment "I felt like crying"

Ryo Ishikawa had the chance to become 6th player to 2-peat the JT Cup victory.
"I can't make birdies on the round that I need it the most. I felt like crying."

Ryo started out 4 shot behind the leader, but he had to wait until 15th for his first birdie of the day. He aimed to catch up with the leaders, but no matter how he played aggressive and has given him the chances, he just couldn't make it. He made eagle on 17th, but it was too late.

"I really wanted to win, but no matter what I tried, I just couldn't reach. I really regret it that I couldn't win."
Ryo finished as 6T with total of 4 under par, 4 shots behind the winner Chan Kim. As he spoke at the interview point, it looked like his eyes were red.

Ryo has been working on his swing changes from March.
"I have thrown away all of my concept and aimed to change from the basics. My theme for this years was intended to reset and change."

Ryo was able to make the cut at PGA Championship and US Open, which was for the first time in 7 years in US Majors.
"I want to challenge US PGA Tour again. That is my only goal."

"Every part of my swing is changing, club face motion, my legs, weight shift, shaft movement everything. Last week, I had some moments that I couldn't strike the ball correctly. But I have overcome many struggles and getting better by each tournament. I know I am getting better."

Ryo has finished in top 10 3 times on 5 tournaments he played. He couldn't defend his title this week, but still his hard work seems to be on the way to success.
"Even I did realize that winning this week was not possible, I was able to keep my concentration and perform. I think I did gain some this week too. I don't know when the next season's tournament would resume, but I will use my off season effectively to train and practice more to be ready for good start next season."
