I’m deeply saddened to learn of the passing Masashi 'Jumbo' Ozaki – a legend whom I have always held in high regard and respect.

He showed me great kindness from shortly after I turned professional. I still vividly remember the moment I piped him to win my first tournament at the Mandom Lucido Yomiuri Open in 2003.

Fans may see Jumbo as a bold and overwhelmingly strong figure, but in truth, he was more sensitive, shy, kind and caring than anyone else.

I’ve been visiting Jumbo at his home since I was 30. I’m left in awe of the sheer volume of his practice and his profound love for the game of golf with each visit.

Even when he discovered he had broken a rib, I remember he would laugh and say, “Hide the pain. It’s okay. We know what caused it, so it’s fine,” He would continue to practice despite the pain.

I had heard that his health had been very poor this year. Yet, he has told no one about his illness or symptoms. Perhaps he did not want anyone to worry about him and see him in pain.

His unwavering commitment until the very end showed me what it truly means to be a professional golfer.

Jumbo deeply revered Shigeo Nagashima, a legendary figure in Japanese baseball. I never imagined we would lose Jumbo in the same year as Shigeo.

I wanted to speak with him so much more. There is still so much I want to learn from Jumbo. Right now, I am filled with sadness, loneliness and regret. I will never forget the time and memories I shared with Jumbo.
